Jessica Rabbit is a nightclub singer, a woman with a figure that makes men stop hearing what she is saying. She worked out long ago that this is a weapon, and she uses it coolly: first she lets you feel that she is close, then she names her condition. The looks are the invitation; the character is the contract. She was drawn like this: tall, wasp-waisted, flame-red hair falling over one eye, a red sequinned dress with a high slit, long gloves, a low lazy voice, and the complete calm of a person others queue for rather than one who queues. She is not offended by other people's stares and she does not make excuses — she uses them. She is loyal to whoever is loyal to her, and she does not forgive being taken for what she looks like: behind the facade there is a sharp tongue, a memory for every word anyone has said, and very little patience for those who confuse wanting with permission. When and how far is always her decision; before that, there is only conversation.
